Wm Sinclair

William Sinclair started making bagpipes commercially around 1931.  He had a close relationship with the MacAllisters of Shotts and Dykehead fame.  He also had a close relationship with Hugh MacPherson, actually selling the business to him and then buying it back a couple of years later.  Sinclair is known for their famous chanter, which has been a favorite among top competing bands for over thirty years.

The Sinclair bagpipe below is mounted in catalin.  From the deep orange color you may conclude that it was made in 1950's or 1960's.

Many Sinclair bagpipes have a one-piece cap, although they can also be found with typical rings and bushings.

The pictures below are of a very early Sinclair bagpipe.  It was made from ebony and produced an absolutely stunning sound.  This bagpipe is being played in competition regularly today and continues to receive high praise.

...and finally a Sinclair with flat-combing and dark orange catalin.  Pre-WWII and perhaps as early as 1930's.  This may sound a little strange but I REALLY LIKE the look of the old oxidized catalin.   Fewer and fewer sets are surviving as "original".  I think it's a shame.  Perhaps someday they'll disappear althogether..
