Unknown # 5

Pictures of these pipes found me.  They are yet another set to study and ponder.  Was the top bead on the ring (as seen here) exclusive to Donald MacDonald?  We know that it does not appear on all his pipes, however did other makers "borrow" this feature from time to time?  Was this something that was done before his time as a maker?  I'm afraid that there are only clues and no clear answers at this time.
