The following pictures were taken of a very old cocus wood Henderson bagpipe that had been retro-fitted
with sterling silver. As you can see, the silver does not fit well and the bagpipe has been disfigured
accordingly. It would appear that the person who did this put more value in the silver than in the bagpipe.
The right way to resilver an old bagpipe is to have silver custom made to fit the bagpipe.

Note the gap between the silver bead and the wood in the top picture and the silver ferrule extending
beyond the wood in the next picture. As you can see below, the stock has been cut to accomodate the
ferrule.

The picture below shows where the wood has been removed right into the combing in order to accomodate
the cap. You can also see where the cap is wider than the bell. This is why the standard silver on
old bagpipes just doesn't work sometimes! Before investing in a retro-fit, make sure the bagpipe hasn't
been devalued in the process. If you're thinking about having your bagpipe fitted with new silver, send
you bagpipe or its measurements to the silver supplier in order to get proper silver made and installed
correctly. It's well worth the extra money.
