Drone Reeds - An Overview

Done reeds primarily fall into two primary categories; cane and synthetic. Many pipers today have never played or even heard cane drone reeds and therefore cannot properly identify with statements like "it sounds just like cane".  It is hard for me to imagine not knowing the sweet, vibrant sound of cane reeds on my shoulder.

There are many reed choices out there.  Some are quite excellent and others fail to deliver on the promises made.  Many require considerable skill in setting them up and making adjustments.  Others are more "plug 'n play" or have a limited range of adjustment.  Some go well in one make of pipes and dissapoint in another.

The issues that concern most pipers include:

1) sound (using "cane" as the standard)

2) pitch

3) efficiency (the amount of air necessary to reach optimal sound)

4) steadiness (tolerance for unsteady blowing)

5) design/construction issues
